![]() |
The Project: Along with meeting all of the goals of BIO 480, in order to obtain credit for BIO 580, students are asked to choose a topic related to Molecular Biology and put together a grant proposal using guidelines for a Jeffress Grant. Proposals will be presented to the class for discussion. Each student is allowed up to 10 minutes for a presentation. The learning objective of this part of the course is for students to obtain more familiarity with both molecular biology and the grant writing process.

The Grading: Grants are of course reviewed and funded or not funded. Your grant will undergo a similar review process to those grants at NIH where a panal of your peers review your grant and give it a score. Your score will be based on your effort throughout the course and quality of presentation and grant. It will be translated into a grade on this project as listed on the table below. Note that less then 10% of all NIH grants submitted are ranked high enough to fund thus for full funding we will truely be looking for exceptional proposals and work in order to acheive this high rank. Grades will be determined by completion of deadlines, quality of classroom presentation (determined by class vote) , following the rules of the grant proposal guidelines and having a complete proposal, grammer, creativity, and having a tenable proposal.
