BIO 270 Lab 6: Reflex Lab Worksheet

Answer the following questions directly on this document, print it out and turn it in when it is complete.

Names:

1. a. Calculate mean and standard deviation latency period of involuntary and voluntary reflexes. Enter these values with the correct units in the appropriate spaces below

Involuntary Latency: Mean __________         Standard Deviation ___________

Voluntary Latency: Mean ____________       Standard Deviation ___________

b. Run the appropriate t-test to determine if the latency for involuntary reflexes is significantly different from the latency of voluntary reflexes.

P value = _______

c. Are the latency periods for these two reflexes significantly different from each other? Give a brief but physiologically sound reason for your results.

2. a. Calculate mean and standard deviation maximum rotation of involuntary and voluntary reflexes. Enter these values with the correct units in the appropriate spaces below

Involuntary Rotation:  Mean __________         Standard Deviation ___________

Voluntary Rotation: Mean ____________         Standard Deviation ___________

b. Run the appropriate t-test to determine if the maximum rotation for involuntary reflexes is significantly different from the maximum rotation of voluntary reflexes.

P value = _______

c. Does this value represent a significant difference?

3. Using the pooled data provided by your instructor, make one column graph illustrating mean latency of each reflex type tested. This figure should be properly titled, labeled, and included error bars.

4. Using the pooled data provided by your instructor, make one column graph illustrating mean rotation of each reflex type tested. This figure should be properly titled, labeled, and included error bars.

(cut and paste figure here)

5. Run the appropriate ttest comparisons to determine if the magnitude or latency of the other experimental reflexes (mental math, muscle strain, iced quadriceps) is significantly different from the control involuntary reflex. These ttests should be done on your Excel sheet. Report below only any significant values achieved from your statistical comparisons, making sure it is clear to the reader which two groups you were comparing. You can do this in a few sentences of text or make a clearly labeled table.

6. Briefly offer a sound physiological explanation for each significant value from the statistical analysis performed in question 5.
