General: two of his aunts filled out the birth certificate and mistakenly gave him the junior thinking his dads name was Frank.
His father said that they were close to two of his aunts when he was an infant and they would walk around with him between them to the point that he learned to walk at 6 months. They'd hold a pencil and he'd hold onto it until they eventually let go of it and he'd walk around with his hand in the air with the pencil thinking they still had it. (Probably Edith's sisters Josephine & Clare)
His parents lived one block south of the capitol building on Capitol Ave. when he was born. When they lived on capitol he had really curly long hair and Edith wouldn't have it cut, (they called him curly top like Shirley temple). When she was away one time his father took him into the barbershop and had all the curls cut off. When Edith returned she cried for about three days over it.
When he was 5 they moved to the homestead at (246 Carlson street) they'd only been there about 6 months, he & a friend brought home a pretty kitty to his mom, but it had a stripe down it's back!!! She had to wash his hair in tomato juice and bath him three times a day for about four days. As a boy who didn't like baths he sure got his share, and was teased about it for years afterwards. She also had to bury his favorite clothes and his shoes.
He had earaches a lot when he was a boy so he stayed home from school often. Since his mother loved to cook, and the heat from the cooking soothed his earache, he learned how to cook really well because of this time in the kitchen with his mother. His wife Joan said he was a much better cook then she was. In fact she always tells the story of Frank teaching Jacki, Scott & Ron how to cook. When Ron married Roxane he wanted Joan to teach her how to cook, because she was so young and didn't know how to cook. She told Ron "no, you teach her how to cook, your dad taught you how!" Also when he had these earaches, it was known as an old wives tale that smoke soothed earaches, so his dad would blow cigarette smoke in his ears for him. Even though Edith was not a smoker, she would light one up and do the same for him.
When he was 12 years old his father took him to a bar and told the barman "this is my son frank, you give him anything he wants if he come's here" (this led to an adulthood of alcoholism)
In school while in Cheyenne he was in the band, and again in junior high in California where he played at the Hollywood canteen and saw many famous movie stars. He was also an excellent dancer and loved to jitter bug. He could pick up just about any instrument and play it as an adult.
When he joined the marines he was asked about the references to band on his sign up papers. For some reason he didn't want to be in the band, so he told the officer he didn't play well. They had him play for them anyway and he purposely squeaked and squawked his way through the music so they wouldn't know of his talent.
Another time a general saw the horse on his Wyoming license plate and asked him if he knew anything about horses, as he had need for someone in the stables. Frank told him he knew nothing about horses to keep from getting the job, as he hated horse, even though he did know enough about horses to do the job.
When he was a teenager in junior high he was very hard to wake up. His dad figured out that he woke up if his feet were tickled, so he'd tickle Frank's feet and run out of the room, as Frank had a big temper.
When he came home from the Marine Corps. On his first leave he had all of his military clothing and supplies as clean and neat as the military expected. His doting mother however thought she'd help him out so she took his perfectly polished and shiny shoes, and polished them with liquid polish. He had a heck of a time getting all the polish off of them. Frank told Joann it was a good thing he'd left the extra clothes he had bought just for inspections behind (these were kept in your locker neatly folded and ready for inspection), as his mother would have washed them all and made more work of them too!
