OTHER EXPERIENCE:
•Instructional technology – I am a campus leader in instructional
technology, and have actively pursued this interest since 1986. Most recently,
I have developed a web page for Human Physiology, and have incorporated the
lectures into PowerPoint. As Acting Department Head, I provided the leadership
and support for a total revision of the curriculum in Anatomy, including the
use of A.D.A.M. (Animated Dissection of Anatomy for Medicine) to project
high-resolution anatomical images in lecture. The change also involved
switching from the traditional instructional format of regional anatomy to use
of cross-sectional anatomy, such as seen with computer-aided tomography and
nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, combined with a developmental and
evolutionary theme.
•Computer operation – I am expert in the use of microcomputers,
including DOS and Windows platforms and the Apple Macintosh. This proficiency
includes word processing, use of spreadsheet and data base management programs,
statistical analysis, graphics and graphing, and instructional technologies. I
have also had considerable experience with the HP-3000 and Digital VAX
computers. Also, I set up and administered the Department of Biology computer
network, several years. As a volunteer consultant to the Northwest Area of the
American Lung Association of Virginia, I have developed spreadsheet templates
for financial reports, and have set up databases for tracking donors. In this
capacity, I also conducted a workshop on computerizing regional offices for the
American Lung Association’s Southeast Conference in Atlanta.
•Programming in Basic – I have written numerous programs in basic from
very simple to fairly complex. The most complex one is a menu-driven program
written in Applesoft Basic that compares sample means using Student’s T-test or
calculates correlation coefficients and performs curve-fitting routines.
•Equipment operation – I have a high mechanical aptitude and am
proficient at operating numerous types of scientific instruments, electronic
equipment, and other mechanical devices.
•Writing and Public Speaking – I have had substantial scientific writing
and editing experience, including papers, theses and dissertations, and have
given numerous talks to civic groups and school children across the state.
RESEARCH INTEREST:
•Translational control of early embryonic development. Using technology for
