This is the antenna of a bark beetle. The beetle burrows along underneath the bark of trees and doesn't want to get it's antennae ripped off. Fortunately, the beetle has this nice little socket to keep an antenna in and keep it out of harm's way. Can you see the groove in the shell with the antenna inside?
