Effects of Maternity Braces on Plantar Pressure Distribution During the Third Trimester of Pregnancy

By Kim Clements, Amy Evertz, Branden Fulciniti, and Colleen Macner

The Purpose of our study is to determine of there is a correlation between the use of a maternity brace and plantar pressure distribution. Maternity braces are designed to support the lower back and abdomen, while transferring the weight of the abdomen closer to the spine where it can be carried more naturally. Since these braces are designed to bring the center of gravity closer to the spine, there could be implications on the pressure distribution of the feet.  Women in their third trimester were chosen because they display the greatest changes in weight and shift in center of gravity.
