Chemistry

The Chemistry Department is one of five departments comprising the College of Science and Mathematics. Since 1980 the department has been ACS accredited, or more precisely has had one of its curricular tracks ACS certified. Recently we have added three more accredited tracks -- one in biochemistry, one in materials chemistry, and one in education. In addition to the 14 full-time teaching faculty, there are two secretaries, a laboratory coordinator, and a stockroom manager. Two additional faculty members, who do not have formal teaching duties, handle our instrumentation, which has become extensive. The teaching faculty’s areas of expertise break down as follows: two inorganic; four organic; two physical; two biochemistry; two analytical; one materials science. In May 2005 the department moved into a new state-of-the-art building on East Campus which it shares with physics.

A critical aspect of our undergraduate teaching philosophy is the involvement of undergraduates in research projects both during the academic year and especially during the summers. The summer of 2004 marked the thirteenth year that our summer research program has been funded by being designated an NSF-REU site. An important part of our research program involves instrumentation. Probably the two most visible aspects of our instrument holdings are the Shenandoah Valley Regional NMR Facility and the JMU Regional Undergraduate Laser Facility. In the NMR facility we have three modern NMR’s, a 300 MHz, a 400 MHz, and a new 600 MHz.
