Learning Center

The Science/Math Learning Center at JMU is a tutorial facility located in the first floor of Wilson Hall. Its purpose is to assist students? learning in first-year math and science courses. The Center is under the direction of Charles Cunningham (Math) and Mark Mattson (Science). In addition, the Center employs ten undergraduate assistants on a part-time basis.

The Center is not intended to be a replacement for class attendance and instruction. Rather, its aim is to reinforce learning and help students master concepts with which they are having difficulty . In general, tutors and students work together at the Center. Students are not receptacles in which to pour knowledge; ?science and math are not spectator sports,? as the saying goes. The Socratic method of instruction is usually employed.
